THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: V A Arunkumar, son of Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan, deposed here on Friday, before the nine-member Legislative Committee that he was never appointed director of ICT Academy by the government but it was the IHRD director who made the appointment before the ICT was registered as a society.Arunkumar said in his statement that the letter from the IHRD director to appoint him was cleared by then Education Minister M A Baby, who was also on the Director Board of the IHRD.His appointment was for the registration purpose and after that such an appointment was not made. Arunkumar also gave a strange statement that ‘his activities in the IHRD can be equated with teaching but never occupied classes there’ and there was no irregularity in any of his appointments or promotion.Ajayakumar, former IT Secretary, in his statement said that the original proposal of the government was to start the ICT in Public- Private Partnership which was later changed by the Cabinet and the project was given to the IHRD for implementation.V S Achuthanandan, the then Chief Minister who was also holding the charge of IT, was aware of this. Though Achuthanandan and former minister M A Baby were there in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, they cited inconvenience and did not appear before the committee.Achuthanandan informed the committee that he would be present on a date after January 20 according to convenience. The nine-member committee headed by V D Satheesan was appointed by the Speaker to probe into charges of irregularity in the appointment of Arunkumar as the director of a state-run institute followed by the allegations raised by P C Vishnunath in the Assembly that there were irregularities in the appointment.
