Sura is a special film for Illaya Thalabathi Vijay, as it is his 50th film and it was released at a time when he is ambitious about building a foundation in politics. The film was specially scripted for him and his domination is established throughout the film.
The background of the story is a small fishermen's hamlet named Velikuppam and the issues surrounding that. Vijay’s character name is Sura and he is considered as the saviour of the whole village, which has 1,000 odd families. All the people of that village love and respect him as an able leader.
The story begins with a full-fledged coast guard search for 15 missing fishing boats that carried numerous fishermen to the deep sea. Villagers look anxious and they gather on the seashore while the Collector is intensifying the search operations. Soon the search is fruitful and all the fishermen except Sura return to shore.
People pray for the safe return of Sura, who saved the stranded fishermen. All their prayers pay off, as Sura finds his way back to Velikuppam. There starts the introduction song, Vetri kodi kattu, which sprinkles messages to Vijay’s fans. This is just a beginning - a series of messages depicting his prospective political career follow thereafter.
On the other hand, Samuthra Rajan, a state minister-cum-smuggler, has his smuggling base near the coastal area of Velikuppam. A real estate baron and his son from Andhra Pradesh approach Samuthra Rajan to help them evacuate that village to set up a multi-crore theme park project. But in a greedy move he kills those real estate barons and tries to occupy the land all by himself.
This instills fury in Sura, as he cherishes the ambition to construct houses for the fellow villagers. Sura tries to shield his village folk from the attack of Samuthra Rajan. A chain of clashes and conflicts happen between Samuthra Rajan and Sura. At the end, what happens to Sura’s ambition is the climax.
In-between all these high-paced events, love blooms between Sura and Poornima (played by Thamanna). Other than romancing and shaking legs with Vijay, Thamanna has nothing special to do in this film.
Through this film Vijay has chosen MGR’s path of using cinema as the mouthpiece to spread messages. One can see a high proportion of that happening in Sura.
Considering the highlights of the film, the beauty of the sea shore and the life of people out there; and songs are captured well. The winning combo of Vijay and Music Director Mani Sharma has once again proved successful; three of the songs are thumbing numbers. The on-screen combination of Vijay and Thamanna works out well. Vijay’s inimitable dancing skills reach a new high in Sura.
Indirect punch dialogues, extreme action sequences, scenes depicting the character as the able leader of the common people, and alluring dance numbers have a great quotient of appeal for Vijay fans. But for avid film viewers, other than Vijay fans, Sura is high decibel propaganda.
