Actor accused of cheating people by delaying college he had promised to build.

Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh: A court on Monday asked the police to investigate allegations that actor Amitabh Bachchan and five others had “cheated” people by delaying the college they had promised to set up a village in Barabanki district.

Shiv Chand, additional chief judicial magistrate (fast track), ordered the Mohamadpur Khala police to investigate the complaint filed by Daulatpur village head Raj Kumari, and submit a report on June 10.

On behalf of Raj Kumari, her son Avnindra Singh last week moved the court for filing a case against Bachchan and five others. Singh alleged that the actor had "cheated" people by announcing the Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Mahavidyala Degree College in Daulatpur village two years ago but work had not started since then.

Bachchan purchased land in Daulatpur village in Fatehpur tehsil of the district in two phases -- in 2006 and 2007 -- and had announced that it would be used for the college.

Bachchan’s family, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and then general secretary Amar Singh attended the foundation laying ceremony and a public meeting in 2008 for the college.

Singh’s complaint claims Nishtha Foundation of actress and politician Jaya Prada was to build the college. "Whenever we tried to contact Devendra Rai of the Nishtha foundation he has threatened us," the complainant said.
