What is the first image that comes to one’s mind when they think of Egypt? Well, it’s of course the Great Sphinx and the pyramids! But, there is more to Egypt than that. Adel El Masry, director, Egypt Tourism Office, India, was in the city to participate in the three-day Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF). Talking about the different facets to Egypt, he said, “We are here to promote Egypt as not just a cultural destination. It is an equally perfect place for a honeymoon or even adventure sports.” Having participated in the exhibition before, Masry believes that the perception of Hyderabadis has changed from the last time he visited. “When I last came to Hyderabad, people who approached me to find out about Egypt were mostly people in their middle age. But, this time, a lot of youngsters visited our stall — they wanted to know about the tourism scenario and also water sports we have to offer,” revealed Masry.Even though Egypt has been a favourite tourist destination, currently its market has greatly dipped. There is a 40 per cent shortfall in the number of incoming tourists, confessed Masry. According to him, “This shortfall in the number of incoming tourists which has been because of the political instability. Yet, I want to tell everyone that even though the government has changed, Egypt is still a very tourist friendly and safe place.” But apart from the amiable disposition that the Egyptians behold, how does Egypt cater to the eating needs of an Indian? “There are certain similarities in the food we serve in Egypt and the Indian food — it is spicy and we eat the same kinds of breads. But, we are looking to open up more restaurants that offer Indian cuisine and cater to vegetarians as well,” assured Masry. Being renowned for its cultural and historical significance, Egypt is now focusing on its beaches, sea-surrounded locations, spas, resorts, golf, nightlife and water sports adventure. Effort is being made to attract tourists from all over the world with varied interests and provide them with a more diverse experience and a satisfactory travel. They want to provide something for everyone — right from the religious and cultural destination for the aged people, to a romantic visit for the couples and an adventure trips for the youngsters. “The night cruise is simply spectacular! The entire feeling is magical and an unforgettable one. I would recommend that for newly-weds,” he suggested. Masry further added that apart from the aforementioned changes, Egypt Air that flies from Mumbai to Egypt thrice a week, will be increased to five times a week to cater to the travelling needs of Indians.
