Opposition Leader VS Achuthanandan on Tuesday demanded the government to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the destruction of the mangroves and filling of the banks of Pullipuzha, a tributary of Chaliyar river, in Kozhikode.
In a letter to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, he demanded to revert the reclaimed water bodies and mangroves to its original state. He also asked to take action against the officials responsible for this. In the letter, he also doubted that the land mafia was behind the episode.
The Revenue Divisional Officer had already sent a notice to the individual who was engaged in such activity.
But this has been neglected and the activity was going on, Achuthanandan said.
Moreover, buildings have started coming up in the area, he said and added that there were widespread protests against it.
