KOCHI: Giving fresh hopes of solving the potable water crisis in Vypeen, the state government has issued administrative sanction to the Vypeen potable water project initiated by the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). The project will be jointly implemented by GIDA and the Fisheries Department. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs12.5 crore, out of which the state has sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore which is the GIDA’s share. The remaining amount will be sanctioned under the State Fisheries Water Supply Scheme. “The work has already been entrusted with the Kerala Water Authority (KWA). The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in four months and the second phase in six months,” District Collector P I Sheikh Pareeth said. The project will mainly concentrate on solving the water crisis in Edavanakkad and Kuzhippilly panchayats, the two areas in Vypeen which are reeling under acute water shortage. Though both the places are under the water supply network of the Paravoor municipality, the water supplied is insufficient to meet the day-to-day requirements of the residents. The total water requirement of both the panchayats is 5 MLD per day, but the supply is very less. The project will be implemented as per the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by the Kerala Water Authority. As per the DPR, a new pump house will be constructed at Aniyil in Edavanakkad. Water will be brought to the new pump house from Paravoor and will be supplied to various places in the panchayats.
