New Delhi: He won a decade-long court battle to allow the citizens of India to hoist the national flag atop their houses. Now, flag fanatic Congress MP, Naveen Jindal, has taken his passion for the Tricolour a step further.
Jindal has introduced an amendment in the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act that might just allow Indians to flaunt their patriotism on more than just on their rooftops.
They can now wear the Indian flag above the waist.
Ten months ago, Jindal had been directed by the government to remove the national colours from his crash helmet.
It was then that Jindal decided to force through an amendment to the act that would allow Indians to sport the Tricolour in a respectable fashion.
The amendment comes as good news for all who want to wear the Tricolour in a respectable fashion especially the Indian cricket team that had been asked to take the flag off its uniform.
The fashion fraternity too, is extremely happy to finally have the freedom to show off their nationalism.
After the incident when fashion designer Malini Ramani was hauled to court for wearing a Tricolour dress, India's fashion community were forced to question the reason for not being able to display their patriotrism.
Fashion designer Rina Dhaka, says, "Our flag is our identity. We should be allowed to wear it if we want."
Naveen Jindal says the flag should imbue in us, a sense of national honour, pride and sacrifice. "With this amendment we will be able to wear the national flag and feel proud to be Indians," he adds.
However, since the first amendment allowing citizens to wear the Tricolour, is not completely glitch-free, Jindal introduced a second bill, which will act as a guard against the dishonouring of the Tricolour.
