Heavy rains in West Bengal and the release of water by the Damodar Valley Corporation have allegedly developed into a flood situation in several districts of West Bengal including Paschim Medinipur district. As of September 19, three persons were killed and over 2.5 lakh people were affected by the floods in southern West Bengal. While many houses were washed away in the flood, the rescue officers saved a drowning woman who was on the brink of death near the Rupnarayan River in Howrah.
Two residents of Shyampur in rural Howrah along with the police of Shyampur police station rescued a woman who was washed away in the flood. As per reports, two people from Gopinathpur village of Shyampur police station went to bathe in the Rupnarayan River on Wednesday. At that time they saw a drowning woman in the river. As soon as they saw the woman in the river, fighting for her life, they jumped into the stream of the river to rescue her. The information was relayed to the Shyampur police station.
Shyampur police reached the spot with the help of local women and took the woman to Jhumjhumi for first aid. The woman was in a state of shock due to the incident. Police informed that the rescued woman’s name is Madhavi Das. She is a resident of Sreepur village of Daspur police station in West Medinipur district. As per her statement, she was doing some work near the river when she was swept away due to a sudden rise in water levels.
After knowing the woman’s name and identity, Shyampur police station contacted the woman’s family through Medinipur’s Daspur police station. When the family members were informed, they came to Shyampur police station. She safely went back to her home after the required formalities.
Many villages in different districts including Howrah, Hooghly and Medinipur have been inundated by rising water levels of the Mundeshwari, Rupnarayan and Damodar rivers. This has resulted in flooding.
