Violence rocked many places in the district as the CPM staged demonstrations following the arrest of party district secretary P Jayarajan on Wednesday. The police used teargas and lathicharged the CPM activists who attacked cops, mediapersons and offices of the government and the Muslim League.
The Bafaqi Thangal Soudham, housing the district office of the Muslim League at the Caltex Junction, was destroyed allegedly by CPM workers.
The CPM men also blocked the police van in which the arrested CPM district secretary was taken to the court. Tension gripped the district headquarters, premises of the office of the District Superintendent of Police and the Town Station as a protest march was organised by the CPM at 4 pm in violation of the prohibitory orders imposed the District Collector for two days.
The march to the office of the district police chief led by M V Jayarajan, M Prakasan, K P Sahadevan, K K Ragesh, P K Sreemathi and K K Sailaja was blocked in front of the collectorate by a strong police contingent.
