BHUBANESWAR: The Capital on Saturday witnessed an unusual event, usually reported from the tribal districts where women take up the fight against the liquor mafia. A group of women ransacked a newly opened stateowned liquor outlet here for operating the outlet in a residential area.
Hundreds of residents of Kharavela Nagar, led by women, destroyed the outlet of Alaka and sent a strong message to the Excise department. The locals woke up to the news of the liquor outlet operating at Plot No.41 and decided to take things into their own hands. Gathering fellow residents, they set out for the outlet and destroyed liquor estimated at several lakhs of rupees. Only after they had completed their task that the police were informed.

The residents were outraged by the fact that the Excise department had permitted opening of the liquor outlet in the residential area and did not even inform the locals.

Investigation revealed that Alaka outlet was permitted to set up shop at Plot No.36 at Kharavela Nagar but it had faced stiff remittance from the residents.

A housewife said the change of location appeared to have happened overnight. "We live with our families, we have kids and youngsters. Does the department not realise what impact it will have on them," she asked.

The building, which was rented to the outlet, was found to have permission for shopcumresidence but not a liquor shop.

The Excise Commissioner has sought a report on the matter from the Excise Superintendent of Khurda.
