New Delhi: Sania Mirza's wrist injury has forced her to pull out of the US Open which starts from Monday.
She is yet to recover from the surgery she underwent in Miami in April after she injured her wrist in March. Her singles ranking has already fallen to 65 and is bound to slip even lower following her decision to give the US Open a miss.
Sania, who was forced to pull out of the first round of the singles competition at Beijing Olympics against Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova as well due to pain in her wrist, has been advised a three-week rest by her doctor.
"Sania Mirza has been advised complete rest for an initial period of three weeks by her consulting doctor after undergoing intensive tests," a press release said.
She had also skipped entire clay court season including the French Open.
"I've always done well at the US Open and it is very disappointing for me to miss the Grand Slam on my favourite surface due to my wrist injury." she said.
With Sania out of contention, India will go unrepresented in the singles events this year as both Prakash Amritraj and Sunitha Rao have failed to qualify for the main draw of men's and women's events respectively.
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi will present Indian challenge in the doubles event at Flushing Meadows, although with different partners.
