Youngsters gear up for CoP

Thousands of youngsters across the state have been getting trained on various aspects of hospitality and tourism ahead of the United Nation’s Conference of Parties 11- Convention on Biological Diversity.

But surprisingly officials seem to be unclear about how many of their services would be actually required during the course of the 19-day convention in October.

A senior official from Tourism department, who did not wish to be named, told City Express that the actual requirement of the number of guides/ volunteers could be estimated only after the registration of foreign delegates is complete.

However, it is known that the registration would be open till September 30, a day before the commencement of the convention. As on record, about 3000 delegates have registered against the expected 10,000.

Training for officials too!

Meanwhile, it is not just students, who are getting trained as volunteers.

About 200 liaison officials from revenue and police departments will also be given a training and orientation programme.

“It was a proposal from Government of India. Officials would be soon identified and given a basic orientation programme over 3-4 days about behaviour, courtesy etc. These would be the officials who escort senior officials and delegates,” said KDR Jayakumar, special secretary to government (forests), Environment Forests Science and Technology department.
