West Bengal Chief Minister on Wednesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging heavy release from dams in the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has led to a man-made flood in West Bengal. The Chief Minister made the allegations after her visit to the flood-affected areas in South Bengal.
“Heavy release from DVC has led to man-made floods in Bengal year after year. After 2015, the State faced critical flood situation in 2017, 2019 and now 2021,” the letter read. The Mamata Banerjee led government has been blaming DVC’s discharging of water for deluge every monsoon season.
The TMC supremo in her letter pointed that despite raising the issues regarding urgent need for renovation, upgradation and modernisation of assets, desilting and dredging activities and increase in the water-holding capacity of the DVC’s dams by around 1.2 lakh acre-feet, to the Centre and DVC in 2015, none were not taken up since then.
The state government had requested to take up the de-siltation of Panchet damn to add an additional 100 million cubic meter storage capacity and clearing of 18,000 check dams.
DVC said that it discharges water after taking consent of the state government. The DVC said it does not decide about water regulation and decisions on this are taken by the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee (DVRRC) where the state’s irrigation secretary is a member.
The tussle between the state government and DVC has been ongoing for a long time. However both the state and the water agency needs to join hands to solve the flood crisis.
