Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly revealed that Rohit Sharma was not keen on taking over the captaincy charge of the Indian team after Virat Kohli relinquished the post. Meanwhile, Rohit was Kohli’s deputy in white-ball cricket during his captaincy tenure and led the Indians on several occasions in the absence of the latter. It was quite clear when Kohli relinquished the captaincy from T20Is that it was going to Rohit who was going to be his successor.
However, Ganguly has now revealed that Rohit was not very keen on taking over the captaincy and he had to give him an ultimatum to say yes otherwise the former BCCI president would announce it to the world.
“Rohit Sharma was not keen on becoming captain of the Indian team. It had gone to a stage where I had to issue an ultimatum that either you say yes or I will announce it to the world. I did it because he is an outstanding captain. After Virat Kohli vacated the position, he was the best man to lead India. And I am not surprised that he is doing well,” Sourav Ganguly revealed in a chat with Kolkata TV.

Rohit is the first captain to win five IPL trophies as he took over the captaincy charge with a big reputation. Under his captaincy, India reached the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup and the final of World Test Championship.
Meanwhile, he has also impressed many with his leadership attributes in the ongoing World Cup.
Ganguly said he had no idea why Rohit was hesitant to take over the captaincy but happy with what he has been doing with the team in the World Cup.
“I don’t know why he was hesitant, but it could be due to the amount of cricket that he has been playing. Test, ODI, T20I and then the IPL, there is lot of cricket and lot of pressure already. Rohit had a lot on his plate and I am very happy that he is doing well,” Ganguly further added.
