Light, Music and Ideas: Countdown to Vivid Sydney 2016
Vivid Sydney is a festival that combines creativity in the form of light art and music with talks and workshops.

The 23-day festival, voted Australia's Best Tourism Event, kicks off on May 27 and runs through June 18.

Vivid Sydney is a festival that combines creativity in the form of light art and music with talks and workshops. The 2016 edition of the festival has an extra five days and more locations added to the program.

Highlights from Vivid Light

Still the centerpiece of the festival, Vivid Light transforms the city into an outdoor light art installation featuring large-scale illuminations, laser lightshows and 3D-mapped projections.

Anticipated highlights include the new addition to the festival, Taronga Zoo's giant multimedia display of endangered animals from Australia and Sumatra, 'Sentiment Cocoon', a 20m tall interactive installation at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the illuminated sails of the Sydney Opera House inspired by indigenous art. The lighting of the sails will mark the opening of the festival on May 27.

Australian and international music

Cutting-edge musicians and groups, as well as many local bands, will be performing during the Vivid festival. This year's program includes the international artist Björk, who will DJ and premiere her first virtual reality project at the famous multi-arts center Carriageworks on June 3. Carriageworks is also hosting a large-scale music and art event entitled Curve Ball on June 11, when the venue will be transformed into an immersive audio-visual experience.

Vivid LIVE, held at the Sydney Opera House from May 27 - June 13, features a lineup of contemporary musicians including New Order, Goodgod Super Club and Anohni.

Discussions and workshops

From debates and lectures to conferences and workshops, Vivid Ideas has a varied list of events throughout the festival. Societal topics such as "Pop Culture, Migration & Revolution: Transnational Responses to Injustice" will be discussed, as well as business-savvy advice like "Marketing In The Age Of The Mobile" and even practical, hands-on workshops -- e.g. "Lumifold: Fold Your Own Paper Lamp" -- have their place.
