The Singapore street hawker famous for serving the world's cheapest Michelin-starred meal will open his next outpost in Australia next month. After first announcing plans to open an outpost of Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle in Melbourne this past summer, the restaurant's Facebook page announced the official opening date for Hawker Chan -- December 8.
Chef Chan Hon Meng received a Michelin star for his soy sauce chicken and noodle stall in the 2016 edition of the Michelin Guide for Singapore. He subsequently garnered international headlines as for serving the cheapest Michelin-starred meal in the world, at US $1.50 a plate. According to Broadsheet.com.au, the restaurant will seat 92 people but won't offer table service or reservations.
In other words, like its original Singapore location, expect long lines and lengthy waits. Following its meteoric rise to fame, Hawker Chan has expanded to Taiwan and Thailand.
The Melbourne location will serve the restaurant's famous Hong Kong-style chicken dish with crispy skin, along with roast pork, char siew barbecue or pork rib, adds Broadsheet. Meats come with either noodles or rice, while sides include wonton soup, seasonal vegetables, Thai-style tofu and a soya bean sprouts dish.
