He was called a 'chocolate boy’ when he made his debut in the Tamil film Industry. Since then, R. Madhavan had played diverse roles in Tamil and Hindi. His latest movie Irudhi Suttru will be showcased at the prestigious Tokyo Film Festival next month. In a free-wheeling chat with CNN News 18, Madhavan talks about his latest hit, new projects and his movie Rang De Basanti being a catalyst for the political movement in the country.
Your latest movie Irudhi Suttru has been selected for Tokyo Film Fest. How does it feel?
It is a matter of great pride and honour. One feels greatly vindicated also because it was a film that was our brainchild as well as a passion project, today has got international acclaim of such order and it is extremely flattering. I will be going to Tokyo along with my producer for this fest.
You had a three-year-long break and came back with Irudhi Suttru. What made you choose this film?
I loved the script and I trained for it for a year to look like a boxer. There were a lot of challenges, but I can tell you that it has been most rewarding and to see it do so well in Tamil has been complete shot in the arm.
When it comes to sports, one could think of cricket and football. Do you see boxing as a sport gaining prominence ever since this film released?
After the movie, I believe a number of people are joining boxing especially in Tamil and in the South. People have reported that it has gone up by 200%. It’s good to be finally seeing the sport of boxing more of a sport than as a means to get a good job in the Government.
How may projects are in the pipeline?
I have got about 3 films. One is a remake of Charlie and the other two, we are still working on the finalisation of the script. So in the next one year, I will be doing in 3 films.
Rang De Basanti went on to launch a larger picture especially on the political movement. How do you look at it?
We never looked at a larger picture when the film was being made but I was astonished to see the candlelight march right after the film was finished on the Jessica Lal case happening in Delhi. And then slowly, nationalistic movement had spread up right after the movie which I’m able to feel and the political change and change of guard is very evident about what people want and even the protest during Nirbhaya case- all these are a repercussion of Rang De Basanti which makes me really privileged to be a part of a film like that.
