Filmmaker Aanand L Rai continues to be celebrated for his successful films ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, both of which starred Kangana Ranaut. Despite the accolades, Rai recently opened up about the challenges he faced during the production of ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, revealing that his relationship with Kangana evolved over time.
In a new interview, Rai admitted that both he and Kangana had changed after the success of the first film, which also featured R Madhavan. He emphasized that if a third installment were ever made, Kangana would undoubtedly be part of it. Reflecting on his evolving relationship with the actress, Rai acknowledged that success had transformed both of them. He shared with Bollywood Hungama, “If we talk about Kangana, Tanu Weds Manu (was released in) 2011. Then she went and did Queen (2013) and then she came for (Tanu Weds Manu) Returns. In an actor’s life also there is a graph, by that time, as a director also, I did not want to repeat myself. Kangana wanted to grow and she was on the rise. I think what went right with us is we were hungry at that point in time, in our own space”
Rai further elaborated on the creative challenges they embraced while working on the sequel, particularly in crafting Kangana’s character, Datto. He and writer Himanshu Sharma, who had just come off the success of ‘Ranjhanaa’, were determined to push boundaries. “We didn’t want it to be easy,” Rai stated. “For Datto (Kangana’s charatcer in Tanu Weds Manu Returns) to be like that… and Himanshu (Sharma, the writer of the film), who wrote the first and then he wrote (the second one too)… Me and Himanshu were coming after Ranjhanaa. So, it was Tanu Weds Manu, Ranjhanaa and (Tanu Weds Manu Returns) and she was coming from Tanu Weds Manu, Queen and (Tanu And Manu Returns). So it was difficult, and we wanted it to be difficult.”
He added, “We never wanted it to be easy. I never feel that any film, ‘ke yaar, yeh toh mere liye bohot easy hai (I never want to feel that a film is easy to make).”
Tanu Weds Manu marked a turning point in Kangana Ranaut’s career, earning her critical acclaim and multiple awards. Reflecting on the impact of the sequel, Rai concluded, “, Tanu And Manu Returns was a point where we all were high on the thought that we should surpass our previous (film) and surprise our audience. Even at this point, it was not about how much money the film will earn. Which is why we got that reaction (from the audience), people poured in their love.”
As for the speculations about the third part of the film, Aanand L Rai set the record straight, stating that a third part wasn’t on the cards as he was “done with the characters.” But it seems the story of Tanu and Manu isn’t over yet. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, he revealed that he “definitely” has plans to take the franchise forward. “Tanu Weds Manu is a kind of franchise that demands a part three. The reason being, those characters are so beautiful, and they were played so beautifully by Madhavan and Kangana. Those characters became a little bigger than the story itself,” he shared.
