Nicholas Galitzine has played roles in various queer narratives. His portrayal of queer characters in movies like Handsome Devil, Red, White & Royal Blue and Mary & George has reportedly led to questions about his personal life. Speaking to British GQ, Nicholas Galitzine shed some light on his real-life preferences.
“I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories,” Galitzine told British GQ. “I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt. At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality,” he added.
Reflecting on his past fears and insecurities, particularly regarding masculinity, Galitzine acknowledged the societal pressure on men to hide their vulnerabilities. He shared, “I was a very scared young man. There’s this notion in masculinity that you have to be in control and certain of everything.”
Despite it, Galitzine has embraced roles that challenge traditional notions of masculinity, such as his recent role as a young pop star in The Idea of You, where he explores a complex relationship with an older woman.
“I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt,” Galitzine continued. “At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality,” he told Entertainment Tonight.
Galitzine also added that the character he plays is separate from his identity. “I am Nick, and I’m not my role,” he explained.
His decision to take on queer roles has not been without its challenges. Galitzine has faced moments of uncertainty and guilt, wondering if he is taking up space that should be reserved for LGBTQ+ actors. “I have so many friends within the community, and I know so many of them didn’t feel like they had these stories growing up,” Galitzine said, expressing his desire to tell more queer love stories.
“My gay friends were like, ‘Wow, to have something cheesy and broad and wholesome is, like, really, really important,'” he recalled, reflecting on the impact of his roles on the LGBTQ+ community.
