Filmmaker Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan Productions’ Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars. The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava, and also features Ravi Kishan as a humorous and kind-hearted cop.

In an interview, Ravi Kishan expressed his excitement, saying he never expected one of his films to go this far. He credited the film’s success to Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan and the writers, adding that it was God’s grace and hard work that got the film selected. When asked if he would take any credit, he joked, leaving it for others to praise him.

Ravi Kishan jokingly revealed that he ate 160 paans during the shoot, as his character was always seen chewing something. While the original idea was for him to eat samosas, he suggested paan instead, which became a memorable part of his role.

Reflecting on his role in Laapataa Ladies, Ravi Kishan shared that his character, Manohar, addresses important themes like corruption and women’s empowerment, portraying a man who is corrupt but still has a conscience, representing the grey areas many people navigate in life.

When asked about possibly joining the team in Los Angeles for the Oscars campaign, Kishan expressed his interest, depending on his schedule and the team’s plans. He also mentioned that the team should celebrate their achievement, as Laapataa Ladies has now put them on the global stage.

The film was shot in the real locations of Sehore, located in Madhya Pradesh and the makers also added real-life villagers and locations as part of the film. Laapataa Ladies opened to massively positive reviews. However, the film’s popularity soared after it was made available to stream on Netflix.

Laapataa Ladies marked the directorial comeback of Kiran Rao after Dhobi Ghat. Before its theatrical release, the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023. It received a standing ovation from the audience present at the festival. The film was released in India in March this year.
