Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson On Maui’s Powerful Lesson In Moana 2: 'Asking For Help Is A Superpower'
As Moana 2 nears its release, excitement builds for Disney's much-anticipated sequel. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who voiced Maui, reflected on the film's powerful message about vulnerability and the courage to ask for help.

As the release date for Moana 2 approaches, anticipation is building for the much-awaited sequel to Disney’s 2016 hit Moana. Known for its vibrant visuals, heartwarming storyline, and award-winning soundtrack, the original film captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Now, nearly eight years later, Moana 2 promises to deliver another tale of adventure, self-discovery, and personal growth set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. At the heart of this journey is the central message of courage, vulnerability, and the importance of asking for help—an idea powerfully conveyed by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who voices the demigod Maui.

In a recent interview, Johnson emphasized the significance of his character’s development in the sequel, reflecting on Maui’s personal growth and the deeper lessons embedded in the story. “The idea of asking for help is actually a superpower,” Johnson said. His portrayal of Maui highlights the complexity of a character who appears tough and self-reliant on the surface but gradually learns the value of vulnerability.

Johnson’s perspective on masculinity and strength resonates deeply with his own life experiences. Reflecting on the pressures he faced growing up and during his wrestling career, Johnson shared how keeping emotions bottled up was once second nature to him. It wasn’t until he experienced personal tragedies, including losing several friends to suicide, that he recognized the power of vulnerability and the need to seek help when necessary. “Masculinity, to me, is not being tough. It’s not being a badass. Powerful masculinity is having the confidence to look inside and say, ‘This is what I’m feeling, and it’s okay,'” Johnson explained.

This message of vulnerability is woven into Maui’s arc in Moana 2. Maui, who initially presents himself as a larger-than-life figure, must grapple with his own insecurities and emotional struggles throughout the film. Johnson beautifully ties this to his own realizations: “When I got to Maui, I was like, ‘Okay, I know who this is.’ This guy who is very presentational, who puts on a show, who loves to hold court, sing and dance, and make people feel good. But there’s a lot that’s brewing deep down that, eventually, he is going to have to contend with.”

Johnson hopes that Maui’s journey will encourage viewers to embrace the idea that even the strongest individuals need support. “Even the strongest of people need help,” Johnson remarked. “When you do finally ask for help, the universe and your loved ones have a way of meeting you halfway.” It’s a message that speaks to both the younger audience and adults alike, reminding us all that strength comes not from bottling up emotions, but from having the courage to share them and seek assistance when needed.

The film’s leading actress, Auli’i Cravalho, who reprises her role as Moana, also reflected on the parallels between her character’s journey and her own life. “Moana and I have gone on similar journeys,” Cravalho shared. The Hawaii native spoke about the shared experiences of stepping into the unknown and the personal growth that comes with leaving home. “She and I have both felt the growing pains of leaving home and the big celebration of coming back and seeing how our families have changed. I still see so much of myself in her strength and vulnerability.”

Moana 2 is poised to capture audiences once again with its blend of stunning animation, heartfelt performances, and timeless messages of courage, self-discovery, and emotional honesty. As Moana and Maui embark on their new adventure, their stories will remind viewers of all ages that no one is invincible and that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but of true strength.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2 will premiere in theaters in India on November 29, 2024.
