Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s The Legend of Maula Jatt, which premiered in Pakistan in October 2022 and revolutionised South Asian cinema, might finally make its way to Indian theatres on September 20, 2024, according to Bollywood Hungama. Zee Studios has reportedly secured the rights to the film, marking the first Pakistani release in India in years. Originally set for a December 30, 2023 release, the film’s Indian release was postponed after distributors withdrew just before its premiere.
Back then, an INOX official had told PTI, “We have been informed by the distributors that the release of the film has been postponed (indefinitely). We were told this two or three days ago. Zee Studios had acquired the rights to The Legend of Maula Jatt as they were expecting the film to do well. But because of the resistance from certain sections, the decision was made to not release the movie.”
Screenshots of PVR INOX announcing the film’s release and then deleting it quickly also went viral online. For those who don’t know, The Legend of Maula Jatt was a huge success both in Pakistan and internationally, and it still holds the record as the highest-grossing Pakistani and Punjabi-language film ever. Based on Nasir Adeeb’s characters, The Legend of Maula Jatt is a modern retelling of the 1979 Pakistani classic. Starring Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, and Humaima Malick, the film explores the intense rivalry between Maula Jatt and Noori Natt.
Meanwhile, Fawad Khan, known for his performances in Hindi films like ‘Khoobsurat’ and ‘Kapoor & Sons,’ is set to return to Bollywood after an eight-year break. Following the 2016 Uri attacks, Fawad paused his Indian cinema career due to the ensuing border closures but is now making a comeback.
According to reports, Fawad Khan has two Bollywood projects in the pipeline. He will star alongside Vaani Kapoor in an upcoming film, signifying his significant return, as confirmed by Filmfare. Moreover, the buzz in Pakistani entertainment circles suggests that Fawad has been roped in for a cameo in Kartik Aaryan’s highly anticipated comedy horror movie, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,’ directed by Anees Bazmee.
