Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi turns 69 today. With his acting prowess and exceptional dance moves, the actor has made a special mark for himself in showbiz. He began his acting career with the 1978 movie Pranam Khareedu, directed by K Vasu. It also featured Jayasudha, Rao Gopal Rao, and Chandra Mohan in the pivotal roles. He made his debut as a lead actor the next year, in 1979, with Punadhirallu, which got him the Nandi Award for Best Actor and Best Feature Film. Chiranjeevi predominantly works in Telugu cinema. He has also appeared in Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada movies. Apart from his successful film career, Chiranjeevi is also known for his political journey. Today, on his special day, let’s take a look at his political journey.
In August 2008, Chiranjeevi founded the Praja Rajyam Party in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The main agenda of his party was social justice. In the 2009 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, the party won 18 of the 294 seats and secured a vote share of over 16 percent. He contested from Tirupati and Palakollu constituencies, winning in Tirupati but losing out in Palakollu, in West Godavari district.
On 6 February 2011, the Praja Rajyam Party merged with the Indian National Congress after two weeks of talks with Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Chiranjeevi was nominated to the Rajya Sabha on March 29, 2012. He was elected and took his oath as a member on April 3.
Later that year, on October 28, he was sworn in as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Tourism. At the 66th Cannes Film Festival, Chiranjeevi launched the Incredible India Exhibition, a partnership between the Ministries of Tourism and Information and Broadcasting.
Chiranjeevi also represented Incredible India at the 14th IIFA Awards ceremony held in Macau that same year. His political journey ended after Andhra Pradesh’s division in June 2014. Despite being loyal to Congress and actively joining their 2014 campaign, he chose not to contest the polls.
In 2017, Chiranjeevi made his comeback to the film industry with his movie Khaidi No 150. The megastar was last seen in Bhola Shankar, directed by Meher Ramesh, which underperformed at the box office.
