Laughter is the best medicine and when you combine it with evergreen Bollywood elements, you get a timeless classic. The genre of comedy is by no means an easy one, but over the years and the decades that have passed, Bollywood has produced comedies that have stood the test of time and still entertain. Here are some best films to watch on Amazon Prime Video this week.
Chupke Chupke
A whiff of the past with an exceptional Dharmendra in a rare comedy role, Chupke Chupke (1975) features the veteran actor in a dual role as he tries to impress his uptight father-in-law in a witty ‘comedy of errors’. Directed by esteemed filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, this classic also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bachchan, Om Prakash, Asrani, Usha Kiran, David Abraham Cheulkar and Keshto Mukherjee.
Hera Pheri
Arguably the best Bollywood comedy of all time, the 2000 movie Hera Pheri established Akshay Kumar’s dominance over the genre while also marking the career-best performance of Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. Be it Babu Bhaiya’s quotable dialogues or the accurate portrayal of lower-middle-class families, comedy legend Priyadarshan – also starring Tabu, Om Puri and Gulshan Grover – has achieved its deserved cult status.
Golmaal
When a film is so funny that it spawns a comedy universe with three more sequels (all available on APV!), and a fifth in the works, then it deserves to be on our list of the best Bollywood comedies of all time. The 2006 movie Golmaal revolves around the chaotic lives of four best friends played by Ajay Devgn, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Sharman Joshi. The Rohit Shetty adaptation remains a fan favourite.
Bawarchi
Bawarchi is one of the most popular films of Rajesh Khanna. The story of this 1972 comedy was well-received by the audience. The film has a rating of 8.1 on IMDb. You can watch this amazing film on Amazon Prime Video.
Welcome
Welcome (2007) makes it to any list of the best Bollywood comedies of all time because Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar are the star turners as Majnu Bhai and Uday Bhai. Directed by Anees Bazmee, the comedy classic also stars Feroz Khan, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal and Mallika Sherawat.
