Imran Khan is back in the spotlight after a hiatus of nearly a decade. The actor, who was last seen in Katti Batti back in 2015, has been considered the poster boy of a true blue ‘green flag’ by his fans. Recently, Imran talked about the representation of soft masculinity in films and reflected on how the portrayal of masculinity and femininity has changed over the years.
When Imran was on a break from celluloid, actors like Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao replaced him as the monikers of ‘green flags’ in Hindi cinema. Sharing his views on soft masculinity on News 18 Showsha, the Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na actor remarked, “Cinema reflects societal changes, and historically, mainstream cinema leaned into very restricted and stereotypical portrayals of masculinity and femininity. Over the past twenty years or so, our cinema has really started to come of age. I think we now have far more positive and inclusive portrayals of masculinity, femininity, and beyond.”
He continued his thoughts by saying, “Today, we’re talking about queer identity in our movies. It’s a great trend. Having said that, it’s perhaps still not at the place where it’s absolutely mainstream. Our largest commercial successes and the most popular and mainstream content still lean quite heavily into retro portrayals. But we’re definitely doing better. I’m optimistic about it.”
While Imran was on break, he became more vocal about mental health issues. Last year, he opened up about his own battle with depression and gave his fans an insight into his life. In the same conversation, the actor shared how he and his uncle Aamir Khan, along with their family, now often discuss such issues whenever they catch up.
He said, “In the past couple of years, at various points, we’ve sat down [and talked]. With Ira starting to really advocate for mental health awareness in the past year and me beginning to emerge back into the public eye and speak about my journey, the joke around the home is that we now get together and finally talk about mental well-being, consciousness, and healthy patterns. It’s now a thing. In our family, we’re trying to support each other in our mental health journeys.”
On the personal front, Imran is now dating Lekha Washington. Before her, the actor was married to Avantika Malik for almost eight years. The two were teenage sweethearts. Unfortunately, they decided to part ways in 2019 as they were no longer “empowering each other to be the strongest and best versions” of themselves. The former couple also has a daughter, Imara, whom they co-parent.
