Imtiaz Ali’s body of work, though not extensive, has built him a strong fan following over time. With his recent outing Amar Singh Chamkila becoming a rage among the audiences and his previous films like Jab We Met and Rockstar enjoying a cult status, the film-maker is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated storytellers of the industry. Imtiaz Ali recently got candid about two of his films that didn’t work at the box office, Tamasha and Jab Harry Met Sejal. He revealed what he would change in these two films.
In a conversation with ETimes, the director discussed the possibility of making alterations to his previous films. He specifically mentioned two films: Tamasha, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, and When Harry Met Sejal, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma.
Regarding Tamasha, he mentioned, “With Tamasha, I would have had Ved and Tara not get together with each other in the end, because the larger story is that she is the muse and he is the artist. She can continue to inspire him, but not be in his life personally. Like she might have moved on, and he might still have bowed down to her and said that you are the one who made me, but he might have lost her.”
Reflecting on When Harry Met Sejal, he shared, “My original idea for Harry Met Sejal, was that when he drops her back to the airport for the second time and she enters the airport, he feels that she might come back and he’s waiting over there where she had met him for the first time; the film should have ended there. At that point we don’t know whether she’s going to come back or not. So, then it would have been, as I intended it to be, just a saga of the road with an open end.”
Meanwhile, in 2018, Imtiaz Ali took to social media to announce that he’d be directing his dream project – the ‘epic love saga’ of Radha and Krishna. “I have always been fascinated by the eternal love story of Radha and Krishna. In all of Indian folklore I know of no other story, which is so intensely personal and yet has such an epic scale (sic),” he had written. The film was supposed to be produced by Reliance Entertainment. However, it didn’t get made.
In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, the director, for the first time, broke silence on the love story that he was set to helm. “I want to make the Radha Krishna film. I’m very inspired by their stories and the mythology. But I’ve to bring myself to a positon where I can make it and by that I don’t mean a physical position. It’s just that I need to imbibe some of the characteristics of Radha and Krishna in myself to be able to make that film,” he told us.
