After beating the lifetime collections of Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi) in just six days of its release, Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 has been storming the box office insanely. The film has already collected Rs 500 crore worldwide, according to Trade analyst Ramesh Bala. It is currently at number 12 position in the list of highest grossing Indian films of all time.
So, is S Shankar planning to turn this enormous box office success of the 2.0 into a possible sequel? The director said though he is hopeful of continuing the franchise with 3.0, he cannot imagine another part without Rajinikanth, who has already made his political ambition very clear.
“We have plans for 3.0 but it’s impossible to imagine the franchise without Rajini sir. I’m not ruling out the option but I can’t take forward the franchise just for the sake of it. The franchise is incomplete without the character of Chitti and I don’t think anyone else other than Rajini sir can play it. The way I see it, I’d love to see 2.0 and its characters pave way to our own superhero franchise, but we need the right script to back the vision," Shankar told Firstpost.
Touted as the most expensive Indian film ever made, 2.0 is said to be even more costly than several successful Hollywood VFX classics like Deadpool, X-Men and Batman.
“If I’m correct, nearly Rs 450 crore is the cost of the production. The producers spent more on the promotions and I don’t know the exact amount. If not for Lyca Productions and Rajini sir, we couldn’t have made the film.”
Meanwhile, the film's Hindi version has set new benchmarks by creating multiple records at the box office on its seventh day of the release. The film, which packed an impressive total in its extended opening weekend, has crossed Rs 132 crore mark at the box office on day 7 as it collected Rs 9.50 crore on Wednesday. It has also become Rajnikanth’s highest earning Hindi film.
