For the first time since Salman Khan made the controversial rape comment, actress Anushka Sharma-his co-star in Sultan, spoke out and called the remark ‘insensitive’. Anushka was in conversation with noted film critic Anupama Chopra and when asked about her reaction on Salman’s controversial comment, the actress tried to distance herself from it by saying, that she wasn’t aware of the context.
“A lot has been spoken about. It was obviously rather insensitive. Something I was surprised by. What it made me realize was that all of us have a responsibility about what we say, especially celebrities. Celebrities specially need to be more aware of what they say publicly or privately," said the actress. “I can’t asses why he said something like that because I don’t know him that much," added Anushka.
When Chopra asked if she had asked Salman to apologise, Anushka said it was not her place to say such a thing. “I don’t know him. Salman is very intimidating. He doesn’t really go out of his way to make someone comfortable and I am too shy to bridge that gap. So I haven’t spoken to him about anything, leave alone this. Whenever we have had a conversation, it has been in a group. He is a grown up, I am sure he knows what he should do," maintained Anushka.
The actress though mentioned that the controversy would ensure that the term ‘rape’ is not used that casually. “A lot of people must have realized that the word should not be taken lightly, I hope now everyone is now more cautious."
The actress plays Aarfa, Sultan’s love interest in the recently released film. Her character has been called regressive by certain section of the media as Aarfa, as a state level wrestling champion, opts out of Olympics when she finds out she is pregnant.
Defending her character, Anushka said she didn’t find Aarfa regressive. “She was pregnant, what could she have done? Got an abortion? She gave up her dream for a having a child- she made the choice to bring the child to the world. I think if the woman is making a choice on her own to not abort the child that is not regressive," reasoned the actress.
“When I first heard the script, I have to admit that point made me think for a bit. When I started shooting for the film, I thought to myself ‘would I do this?’ When you understand the situation, you realize it’s not that he asked her to give up her dream. She holds a grudge against Sultan, not just that her child died but she gave up so much for a person who did not give a shit about her. By the end of the film she goes back to what she is doing," Anushka added.
The actress also said had she been in a similar situation she would have also gone ahead and had the child. “If tomorrow I got to know that I am pregnant, I wouldn’t abort the child to do a film. “
