Jayalalithaa's Tryst With Hindi Films: 'Izzat' Opposite Dharmendra
Izzat released in 1968 and featured Dharmendra in a double role with Tanuja and Jayalalithaa playing his leading ladies.

While Jayalalithaa worked in some of the most memorable Tamil films in 1960s and 1970s, the actress only did one Hindi film. Directed by Tamil director T Prakash Rao, Izzat released in 1968 and featured Dharmendra in a double role with Tanuja and Jayalalithaa playing his leading ladies.

While Tanuja played a grieving upper class woman in the film, Jayalalitha played a lively, tribal girl Jhumki who falls for the rich boy, played by Dharmendra. The otherwise shy, introvert Jayalalithaa played a chirpy, feisty tribal girl who charmed the rich boy with her charms and innocence.

The film, though, did not create any ripples at the box office. But till date, it is remembered for being the only Hindi film in which Jayalalithaa worked as a leading lady.
