Deadpool & Wolverine has been dominating the worldwide box office since its release on July 26. It also became 2024’s top grossing film previously. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie has set another record as it became the highest grossing R-rated film of all time. The title was earlier held by Joker, featuring Joaquin Phoenix. In response to this achievement, director Todd Phillips dropped some kind words for MCU movie director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds, along with everyone who contributed to the film’s success.
Just days after the record was broken, Todd shared a screenshot of a headline about the achievement and added a funny photo of Deadpool dancing on the iconic Joker steps, replacing Joaquin’ character. Interestingly, Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s film reached the $114 billion mark in just 23 days, while the DC movie’s worldwide collection is $107 billion. Congratulating the Marvel team, the filmmaker wrote, “Have to tip my hat to Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy for this absolute steam roller of a movie. We knew it was gonna be big, but this is too much. Congrats to everyone involved.”
Hours after Todd Phillips congratulated the team behind Deadpool & Wolverine, director Shawn Levy thanked him for his kind words. Shawn also shared his excitement about seeing the magic Todd has created in Joker 2, which is scheduled to release in October. The filmmaker replied, “Thank you, Todd Phillips. Cannot WAIT to see what delicious madness you’ve cooked up for us next.”

Todd Phillips’ Instagram post appears to be the response to Ryan Reynolds. Back in 2019, when Joker overtook Deadpool 2 to become the highest grossing R-rated movie, the actor had congratulated the team with a hilarious message on Instagram. He wrote, “R-Rated box office congratulatory posts aren’t like the ones you’re used to.”

Earlier, when the Marvel movie officially surpassed the mark, in a press release, Disney stated, “With the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, in addition to Pixar Animation Studios’ Inside Out 2, Disney now has the top two movies of the year and back-to-back $1 billion hits, making it the only studio to ever achieve that feat in a given year. Deadpool & Wolverine is now the 31st film from The Walt Disney Studios (including 3 Fox films pre-acquisition) and the 11th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including 2 for Sony) to reach this milestone. Disney is now home to over half of the 55 films that have ever grossed $1 billion at the box office. In fact, Marvel Studios is responsible for the second most $1 billion films of any studio, behind only The Walt Disney Studios itself.”
Other than Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the MCU movie also stars Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapicic, Aaron Stanford, Brianna Hildebrand, Tyler Mane, Rob Delaney, Lewis Tan, Jason Flemyng, Kelly Hu, Ray Park, Dafne Keen, Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, Wesley Snipes, Chris Evans and Henry Cavill.
