Nag Ashwin’s directorial venture, Kalki 2898 AD, has finally been released in India amid much anticipation. The film stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani in key roles. When the film’s trailer was released, fans were curious to know what roles Deepika and Disha would play in the film. Here’s all we know about the two actresses’ characters in Kalki 2898 AD:
Deepika Padukone as Sumathi
Deepika Padukone plays SUM-80 or Sumathi in the film. Her character is pregnant with the child who will prove to be the nemesis for the evil forces ruling the world. While Prabhas’ character is seemingly tasked with capturing Sumathi, Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama vows to protect her and her unborn child. The unborn child is a Kalki avatar.
In the trailer, Amitabh Bachchan tells Deepika Padukone that she is carrying a “god” in her womb. It is hinted that this child will defeat supreme leader Yaskin who has taken over Kashi. Yaskin is played by Kamal Haasan. Makers have been tight-lipped about the details regarding Deepika’s character. However, as per early reviews, she has a meaty role in the film.
This is the fourth time that the actress will play a mother on screen. She previously played a mother in Brahmastra, Jawan and Bajirao Mastani. Interestingly, Deepika Padukone is also pregnant with her first child. At the film’s pre-release event, Rana Daggubatti teased Deepika about still being in character. The actress replied, “The movie went on for about three years. So I was like, why not? Just three months more.”
Disha Patani as Roxie
Disha Patani’s Roxie is shown to have banter with Prabhas’ Bhairava in the trailer. In the trailer, Disha Patani tells Prabhas that he only loves himself, hinting at their potential romance. Disha will likely perform action sequences in the film, as hinted in the trailer. While her character’s name and poster were revealed on her birthday recently, not much is known about her character. However, given her action sequences, some netizens speculate that she will play a spy or a soldier in the film.
Kalki 2898 AD promises to be an interesting blend of sci-fi and mythology. As per Indian mythology, Kalki serves as Vishnu’s avatar in the last phase of the Kali Yug. As per legend, Kalki also has a wife, Padma, who has the celestial qualities of goddess Lakshmi. It is unclear whether Disha’s character is inspired by Padma.
