Kiran Rao Reveals Why She And Aamir Khan Got Married: 'Did It Because Of Parents'
Kiran Rao made a surprising revelation that she married Aamir Khan due to parental pressure and they initially lived together for a year.

Kiran Rao has openly discussed her relationship with ex-husband and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan on several occasions. The couple, who shocked many with their separation three years ago, continue to maintain a strong friendship and co-parent their son. Recently, they even collaborated to direct and produce Laapataa Ladies, which received positive responses from both critics and audience. In a recent interview with She The People, Kiran spoke about her married life with Aamir Khan and shared her views on marriage, particularly how it is different for women.

The filmmaker highlighted the positive side of marriage, such as building new family, relationships, security and stability. She further made a surprising revelation that the former couple got married due to parental pressure and they initially were in a live-in relationship for a year.

Rao said, “Amir and I lived together for about a year before we got married and honestly, we did it more because of our parents and you know all the rest of it. Even at that time, we knew that it’s a great institution, if you can function as individuals as well as a couple within that institution. I think the way you interpret marriage is important because it was for a particular purpose and this social sanction really matters to a lot of people, it matters to children and there’s a lot of great things that marriage gives you. It gives you a new family, it gives you relationships and it gives you a sense of security and stability."

Kiran Rao further added, “I think the thing that we don’t talk about enough is how marriage tends to stifle especially women. As Apes, you know originally we were living in groups. This sort of nuclear kind of family thing is a pressure and it’s usually a pressure on women because there’s so much responsibility on the woman. To run the house, to keep family together and in fact, women are expected to keep in touch with the in-laws, women are expected to be friends with your husband’s family, so it’s a lot of expectation."

Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan first met on the sets of Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2001 film, Lagaan, where she worked as an assistant director. Their relationship blossomed over the years, as they began dating in 2004 and got married in 2005. In 2011, the couple welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, via surrogacy. However, after 10 years of marriage, Rao and Khan announced their separation on social media in 2021. Before marrying the filmmaker, Khan was married to Reena Dutta, with whom he shares two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan.
