Nandamuri Balakrishna is regarded as one of the most influential actors in the Telugu film industry. Despite his immense popularity among the masses, he has been the subject of numerous controversies throughout his career. On the occasion of his birthday on June 10, here is a look at the 64-year-old actor’s most headlined controversies, over the past years.
Being an influential figure, Nandamuri Balakrishna has starred in immensely successful projects in his career. However, the actor constantly stays in the headlines.
Back in June 2004, he was in the news for allegedly shooting filmmaker Bellamkonda Suresh and his associate, Satyanarayana Chowdhary. Reportedly, he used a revolver registered under the name of his wife, Vasundhara Devi. When he was arrested, he claimed that it was done in self-defence, claiming that he was attacked by Bellamkonda and his associate. Due to a lack of evidence, nothing happened in the case.
In 2016, the actor received flak for his misogynistic comments at an event. He made remarks on the kind of roles his fans want him to portray. He reportedly stated, “I can only do certain kinds of roles due to my fans. Will they agree if I woo girls or just eve-tease? They won’t accept. I have to either kiss her or make her pregnant in the least. I have to commit to it.” A statement was issued by TDP (Telugu Desam Party) since he is a member of the party. It said that the comment did not aim at anyone and was made out of fun and that he regrets and apologises for his words.
Nandamuri Balakrishna has frequently made headlines for his temper and alleged abuse towards his fans. In 2021, he was captured slapping a fan who was aiming his phone towards him, at an event in Hindupuram, Andhra Pradesh. When the controversy gained momentum, the fan told the press that he “didn’t mind” it. Before this incident, he was criticised for slapping a fan in Nandyal, who mistakenly fell on him while taking a selfie.
