The highly anticipated third installment of Rani Mukerji’s ‘Mardaani’ series has officially been announced by Yash Raj Films (YRF) on the occasion of the film’s 10th anniversary. This gripping cop thriller, which stars Rani Mukerji as the fearless and determined cop Shivani Shivaji Roy, has already seen immense success with its previous two installments.
In the ‘Mardaani’ series, Rani Mukerji’s portrayal of Shivani Shivaji Roy has redefined the depiction of women in traditionally male-dominated fields. As a relentless and courageous officer, Shivani challenges gender norms, standing as a symbol of strength and integrity. Her unwavering dedication to justice and her bravery in the face of danger have made her an iconic character, embodying the power and resilience of women in authority.
To mark the milestone, YRF’s official Instagram handle shared: “10 years of #Mardaani and the next chapter awaits. Celebrating the feisty, daredevil cop #ShivaniShivajiRoy and the spirit of #Mardaani today. Thank you for a decade of love and appreciation for our beloved franchise. We are inspired again thanks to you. #RaniMukerji #10YearsOfMardaani.”
The first ‘Mardaani’ film, released in 2014, was followed by a successful sequel in 2019, both receiving widespread acclaim and achieving box office success.
In 2023, Rani Mukerji confirmed her return for ‘Mardaani 3’. Expressing her excitement, she stated, “I’m thrilled to see how ‘Mardaani 3’ shapes up. I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I would love to step back into the shoes of Shivani Shivaji Roy.”
In an official statement, Rani emphasized the importance of a strong script for the next film, saying, “I will be very happy and excited if the ‘Mardaani 3’ script is something truly compelling. As an actor, I believe in doing a film only when the story is powerful and has a meaningful impact.”
Reflecting on her experience with the sequel, she admitted, “When I did ‘Mardaani 2’, I was quite nervous because I had never done a sequel before. I wondered if I could reprise a character I had already left behind. But to my surprise, I enjoyed it immensely. Now, having experienced it, I’m eager to reprise the role once again in ‘Mardaani 3’.”
On the professional front, Rani Mukerji was last seen in ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’.
Inspired by true events, the film centers around Mrs. Chatterjee, an Indian immigrant living in Norway, whose life is turned upside down when her children are taken away by Norwegian Child Welfare Services on grounds of alleged neglect rooted in cultural differences.
Rani Mukerji delivered a riveting performance as Mrs. Chatterjee, portraying a mother who defies all odds and challenges an entire system to reunite with her children. The film explored themes of cultural clash, the challenges faced by immigrants, and the lengths to which a mother will go to protect her family.
