The 77th Cannes Film Festival, held in the iconic French Riviera, is one of the most prestigious film events globally. On May 18, Selena Gomez’s latest film, the Spanish-language musical crime comedy Emilia Perez, premiered to great acclaim. The movie received an 11-minute-long standing ovation with the audience hooting, whistling and cheering for the cast. This proud moment moved the actress to tears of joy.
According to a report in Deadline, the movie received a standing ovation as the credits rolled. Director Jacques Audiard thanked the audience for their love and support. Post his speech, the applause continued for another two minutes, bringing Selena Gomez to tears.
Jacques Audiard’s film also features Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana and Edgar Ramirez, all of whom attended the first big premiere. In Emilia Perez, Selena Gomez plays the wife of drug cartel leader Manitas, portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascon. Manitas seeks the help of an “overqualified and undervalued” lawyer named Rita, a character played by Zoe Saldana, to secretly undergo a sex change operation to become a woman. The film also includes original songs performed by the cast.
The festival has already showcased major Hollywood films like Megalopolis and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Earlier, Selena Gomez mentioned that her role in Emilia Perez was “one of the most challenging things” she had done. Recalling a moment during an interview on the SmartLess podcast, the actress said, “There’s this scene where I’m being left. I’m not giving anything away and I remember I channelled the moment when I had to go to rehab for the first time and leave. I just felt like it was just getting that out when I remembered that first moment and being terrified so it felt really cathartic.”
For her latest Cannes appearance, Selena Gomez made a glamorous entrance and joined the director of her film on the red carpet. The 31-year-old singer looked stunning in a gorgeous black and white gown by renowned designer Saint Laurent. She paired the elegant dress with diamond jewellery. Her striking outfit featured an intriguing off-the-shoulder neckline that crisscrossed and wrapped around her body. The bodycon fit perfectly hugged her figure, accentuating her curves. To complete her look, she wore a pair of strappy sandal heels.
