Bollywood star Sanjay Dutta’s life and career has been full of controversies. In his biopic titled Sanju, director Rajkumar Hirani successfully focused on multiple aspects of his life. Rajkumar Hirani missed out on certain important ones too. In the biopic, it is shown that he had multiple girlfriends, but the movie refrained from mentioning actress Madhuri Dixit. Allegedly, Sanjay Dutta and Madhuri Dixit were in a relationship in the 1990s. Reports suggested that these actors fell in love on the set of Saajan, which was released in 1991. The film was directed by Lawrence D’Sourza. The romance shown in the movie, the storyline, and the performances of both of the actors made the movie a huge success. It earned Rs 18 crore at the box office.
Director Yasser Usman, in his book Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy, wrote: “He was always following Madhuri around and whispering, ‘I love you.” A statement from Madhuri herself created some controversy, as she said, “Sanjay Dutt is the only guy who makes me laugh all the time.” This statement by Madhuri further fuelled the rumours.
According to sources, they did not claim their relationship publicly, as Sanjay Dutt was already married back then and had a daughter too. Their relationship fell apart as Sanjay faced serious charges for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Due to this, they could not continue their relationship. Madhuri and Sanjay appeared together on the silver screen for many films, such as Saajan, Taneedar, Kanoon Apna Apna, and Khalnayak.
None of the actors accepted the rumours. Both Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt denied their alleged relationship multiple times. Sanjay once said in an interview, “I have worked with Madhuri, and we have done several films together. It’s important for me to establish a good rapport with all my co-stars, whether it’s Madhuri or Sridevi. For instance, during the initial days of filming ‘Gumraah,’ I needed to connect with Sridevi, who tends to be reserved. So, what Madhuri said didn’t bother me; in fact, it didn’t bother me at all.” He also added, “I wish I had a romantic relationship with Madhuri, but I don’t!”
Sanjay even apologised to Madhuri Dixit once when the rumours of their affairs circulated. During the shoot of Khel, it is said that Sanjay Dutt apologised to Madhuri, and she received the apology graciously.
