Perhaps no possible answer can explain "Who you are". Nag Ashwin in his 'Yevade Subramanyam' tries to take us through the journey of self-discovery. In his own way, he sketches a person's realization. He gives us a story of a selfish man who thinks money and status are above satisfaction and humanity.
Subramanyam (Nani) is a tooth caught between the tongue of greed and the mouth of epiphany. He wants to marry his boss's daughter for a single reason - she is his future. He's a genius, she's a model but she's rich, that's what matters. He fails to say why he loves Ria (Ritu Varma) when his friend, Rishi (Vijay Deverakonda) asks him to throw tidbits about his love story. Somehow, amidst his ponderation, Nandi alias Anandi (Malavika Nair) enters the scene. Her arrival rewrites his attitude toward life.
A genuinely funny scene, maybe even a tribute to the 2004 Venkatesh - Katrina Kaif starrer 'Malliswari', is a favorite. In 'Malliswari', it was a pug; in 'Yevade Subramanyam' Nani, Vijay and Malavika mourn a dead goldfish. Many such scenes in the beginning make the narrative less boring though there's repetition in the two and half hours jovial drama.
A character named Pemba helps Nani and Malavika in their journey to Doodh Kashi, a mystic river, locked away in the Himalayas. Pemba in other words is a crazy Steve Buscemi on a plane. Winning is not about moving ahead in life altogether. It's solely connected to enjoying the moments that are offered in life.
Meanwhile love blossoms between Nani and Ms. Nair via Ilaiyaraaja's gem "Challa Gaali Thakuthunna". Love doesn't need an explanation, it's got to do with two people - two minds. In spite of that if a preface cannot be articulated... it's no love. It's the culmination of a raw imagination. Nani, with his earnestness, urges us to push the buttons of our life the way we want it to work.
