Zendaya’s latest film Challengers has hit the theatres today, April 26. The sports drama directed by Luca Guadagnino has opened to mostly favourable reviews. With Challengers, the actress has tried her hands at something new. However, there is no arguing that Zendaya shot to fame after portraying the role of MJ in three Spider-Man movies, alongside Tom Holland. Interestingly, the previous Spider-Man female leads — Emma Stone and Kristen Dunst have also slipped into the shoes of a tennis player for a film, like Zendaya. This sparked a viral meme, circulating widely on social media. Addressing the coincidental connection, Zendaya has shared her thoughts on the meme.
On April 23, Zendaya marked her presence on the television show Good Morning America. Her Challengers co-stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist were also present. During the conversation, co-anchor Robin Roberts displayed the Spider-Man and tennis crossover on the screen. “Have you seen this meme? You, Emma Stone, Kristen Dunst (starred in) Spider-Man, but you have now gone on to play the role of a tennis player. What’s the pipeline?" she asked.
In her response, Zendaya admitted to coming across the meme. She claimed not to know the reason behind the bizarre connection of all the female protagonists of the live-action Spider-Man movies essaying the character of tennis players in the future. “I don’t know. We were joking, I was like, maybe it’s just some prophecy that I need to fulfill. It’s quite funny, isn’t that? I don’t know," she said, before adding that “it worked out" for the other actresses and she hoped the same for Challengers too.

While Emma Stone was a part of two The Amazing Spider-Man movies co-starring opposite Andrew Garfield in 2102 and 2014, Kristen Dunst featured in three web-slinging films starring Toby Maguire in the 2000s.
Emma Stone put on her tennis shoes for the biopic of legendary athlete Billie Jean King in the 2017 film Battle Of The Sexes, starring Steve Carell. Meanwhile, Kristen Dunst took the tennis courts in the 2004 romantic comedy Wimbledon, cast opposite Paul Bettany.
In Challengers, Zendaya plays a retired tennis coach Tashi aiming for her husband’s victory in a tennis match. However, he lands a face-off with his former friend and Tashi’s ex-partner.
