A 14-year-old tribal girl, who was allegedly sexually exploited by a man on the pretext of marriage, was found hanging from a tree in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, police said on Saturday. The minor’s mother alleged that her daughter was raped, killed and hanged from the tree in an area under Mufassil police station on Friday.
The accused, identified as Arman Ansari, has been arrested. He works as a construction worker, Superintendent of Police Ambar Lakra told PTI. He was charged under IPC sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and provisions of the SC/ST Act and POCSO Act, Lakra said.
The police are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain whether she was killed first and hanged from the tree to stage a suicide. The civil surgeon of Dumka has confirmed that the minor was 8-10 weeks pregnant.

– Superintendent of police Amber Lakra told ANI that an investigation is on. The accused, identified as Arman Ansari, has been arrested and police were trying to file a chargesheet as soon as possible, the SP added.
– The chief of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will visit Dumka on Monday and meet the victim’s family and other officials.
– The girl used to live with her aunt in Dumka, where she got into a relationship with Ansari. When she asked Ansari to marry her, he killed her, the sources said. She was later found pregnant by the doctors.
– Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed his anguish over the incident. “I am deeply saddened by the incident in Dumka. The accused has been arrested. I have directed the Dumka Police to take strict legal steps to ensure justice (to the victim’s family). May God give peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this critical time,” Soren tweeted.
– The SP of Dumka said that the deceased girl, a minor, was found hanging from a tree in Dumka. He further said that the accused Arman Ansari has been booked under Section 302 of IPC, SC ST & POCSO Act and the matter is being investigated. A postmortem is being conducted to ascertain whether she was pregnant or not.
– Senior BJP leader Babulal Marandi in a Twitter post claimed that the girl was hanged after being raped by the accused. The former chief minister tweeted, “Who are you saving? Have shame! Whatever you and your police hide, we will get her justice.”

Amid confusion over the continuation of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren as an MLA, 32 MLAs of the ruling UPA coalition were on August 30 taken to a resort in Raipur, the capital of Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh.
– JMM spokesperson Supriya Bhattacharya said the party will give its reaction to the tribal girl’s death on Sunday.
– JMM general secretary and Jama MLA Sita Soren said the incident is unfortunate and police should ensure justice for the victim soon. “Body of the girl was found hanging from a tree. She is said to have been killed. This is a very unfortunate incident, and Dumka police should arrest and ensure the strictest punishment to the accused,” she said.
– The incident followed an incident on August 23, when a man identified as Shahrukh allegedly poured petrol on a 16-year-old girl from outside the window of her room when she was sleeping and set her on fire. The teenager, who reportedly had spurned his advances, succumbed to her injuries on August 28.
– On August 28, a 15-year-old tribal girl was raped allegedly by a 26-year-old man after barging into her house in Ranchi. The accused in both cases were arrested.
