From Angelo Mathews To Vasbert Drakes, a Look at Players to Have Been 'Timed Out' in Professional Cricket
While Angelo Mathews is the first to be 'timed out' at international level, there are several instance of batters being dismissed in this fashion in professional cricket.

Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews set a unique record after he became the first player ever to be timed out in international cricket. Mathews achieved this unwanted feat during his side’s World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday.

The incident took place in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings after Sadeera Samarawickrama returned to the dressing room.

The strap on Mathews’ helmet was broken and so he called for a replacement resulting in a delay in him taking the strike.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed over the delay and following a lengthy discussion, the on-field umpire adjudged the Sri Lanka cricketer out.

Mathews became the first player to be timed out in international cricket. There have been such dismissals in domestic cricket across the globe.

To be precise, six players have been victims of time-out dismissals.

Andre Jordan

The very first incident of a cricketer being declared timed out occurred back in 1987. It was a domestic game, played between Eastern Province and Transvaal in Port Elizabeth, in which South Africa’s Andrew Jordan was timed out. The fixture was organised by the South African board for non-white cricketers during the apartheid era.

Hemulal Yadav

Playing for the Tripura cricket team, Hemulal Yadav was adjudged timed out during a domestic game against Odisha in Cuttack back in December 1997. Yadav is the only Indian player on this list. The incident had taken place during the final day of the match. he was having a conversation with his team manager and this resulted in the delay.

Vasbert Drakes

In a peculiar turn of events, West Indies’ Vasbert Drakes failed to appear in time for the game after his flight was delayed. The bizarre incident took place during a South African domestic cricket match in the 2002-03 season. The match was being played between Border and Free State.

Andrew Harris

The fourth incident of a time-out dismissal took place during a game between Nottinghamshire and Durham in 2003. It was England’s Andrew Harris who was adjudged timed out in that game. Harris endured an injury and felt he would not be required to come down to bat. A Nottinghamshire batting collapse forced him to do otherwise, but Harris did not get adequate time to take his stance. He was adjudged timed-out.

Ryan Austin

West Indies’ Ryan Austin faced a similar fate after he was late for his batting during a game between Combined Campuses and Colleges and Windward Islands at the Regional four-day competition in 2014.

Charles Kunje

Zimbabwean cricketer Charles Kunje was timed out during a game between Matabeleland Tuskers and Mountaineers at the Logan Cup in Bulawayo back in December 2017.
