It was a thrilling match of cricket where Afghanistan ended up on the winning side in front of a jam-packed stadium. It was a big blow for England in their title defence as they had already suffered a defeat against New Zealand in the tournament opener.

It was a forgettable campaign for England as apart from Ireland, they also suffered a defeat to Bangladesh in the group stage. The duo guided Bangladesh to 275 at Adelaide Oval, while Rubel Hossein claimed a four-fer to reduce England to 260. Jos Buttler (65), Ian Bell (63) and Chris Woakes (42*) fought hard for England but it wasn’t enough for them to rescue their side.

Afghanistan beat England by 69 runs – 2023 World Cup

Displaying the valour that best epitomises the people of the strife-torn nation, Afghanistan caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of World Cup as they outclassed defending champions England by 69 runs on Sunday. Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave early impetus while Ikram Alikhil provided the final flourish to guide Afghanistan to a competitive 284 all out after being put into bat. The Afghan bowlers then thrived under lights, dishing out a collective effort to bundle out England for 215 runs in 40.3 overs and register just their second World Cup win, eight years since their last against Scotland in Australia.
