Premier paceman Mohammed Shami opened up on meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi after India’s heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the ODI World Cup Final on November 19. After playing dominant cricket in the first 10 matches, India failed to step in the most important match of the tournament and lost it by 6 wickets. Shami was the standout bowler in the tournament with 23 scalps in 7 matches as he played a crucial role in India’s journey to the final.
PM Modi met the Indian cricket team players in the dressing room and consoled them after the defeat. The Prime Minister hugged Shami and hailed him for his performance.
“At that time we had lost the match, in such a situation when the Prime Minister gives you confidence, it is a different moment. It is very important. Because morale goes down, then if your PM is with you then confidence increases,” Mohammed Shami told ANI.
Earlier, Shami also shared in which he could be seen getting consoled by PM Modi. The right-arm quick ended the ODI World Cup 2023 as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets.
“Unfortunately yesterday was not our day. I would like to thank all Indians for supporting our team and me throughout the tournament. Thankful to PM @narendramodi for specially coming to the dressing room and raising our spirits. We will bounce back,” Shami wrote.

PM Modi consoled the Indian players individually and motivated them after the defeat.
Meanwhile, India entered the final unbeaten and favourites to win a third title, could only set a below-par 241 target for Australia.
Chasing a tricky 241 for victory in the final, Australia slipped to 47-3 before left-handed opener Head hit his second century of the tournament to steer the team home with seven overs to spare.
