Poor AQI, 23 Trains Delayed: Dense Fog Covers Delhi, NCR As Mercury Dips to 6°C
Delhi and NCR cities woke up to poor visibility due to dense fog and 'poor' air quality, causing delay in train and flight operations.

Delhi and its adjoining areas woke up to a cold and foggy morning as cold wave continued to prevail in the national capital on Friday. With the mercury dropping to 6 degrees Celsius, Delhi and NCR cities woke up to poor visibility due to dense fog and ‘poor’ air quality, causing delay in train and flight operations.

As many as 23 trains to Delhi were delayed on Friday due to cold weather conditions in the national capital. Poor visibility and air quality index (AQI) has caused these trains to run late, informed Railways.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), zero visibility was reported near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport early in the morning due to “very dense fog conditions”. Earlier, the weather department had said that dense fog will prevail in Delhi NCR for the next three days.

The air quality index in several parts of Delhi, such as Patparganj and Mathura Road, was recorded at over 350 (very poor), while the AQI in NCR cities like Noida was recorded at around 327 at 8 am on Friday.

“Cold day” to “severe cold day” conditions were recorded across many northern states in India, including Delhi, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. However, the weather agency predicted that severe cold day conditions are likely to reduce over northwest India in the next few days.

Dense Fog to Engulf Parts of North India

The IMD forecasted dense fog conditions for a few hours in the morning in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh till January 14, and in Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and other parts of East and Northeast India.

Meanwhile, ground frost conditions in Uttarakhand has been predicted for Friday by IMD.
