Technician Who Helped in Building Launchpad For Chandrayaan-3 Now Sells Idli At a Stall in Ranchi

Hailing from Ranchi, Deepak Kumar Uprariya, who happens to be a technician in HEC (Heavy Engineering Corporation Limited) has been selling idlis at a stall to make ends meet. He has a shop opposite the Old Legislative Assembly in Dhurwa area of ​​Ranchi. Deepak worked for building ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 launchpad. However, he has not received his salary in the past 18 months. For those who don’t know, HEC also made the folding platform WBS and sliding door for Chandrayaan. Now, it is building another launchpad for ISRO.

Selling idlis does not mean that he has left his job. He is managing everything together. The technician sells idlis in the morning and goes to the office in the afternoon. In the evening he sell idlis again before heading back home.

While speaking to BBC, he explained, “First I managed my house with a credit card. I got a loan of Rs 2 lakh. I was declared a defaulter. After that I started running the house by taking money from relatives. So far I have taken a loan of four lakh rupees. As I have not returned the money to anyone, now people have stopped lending. Then I mortgaged my wife’s jewelry and ran the house for a few days.”

Deepak originally comes from the Harda district of Madhya Pradesh.

In 2012, Deepak quit his job in a private company to work for the HEC. He used to get Rs 25,000 per month. However, he joined HEC for a salary of Rs 8,000. He had big hopes from HEC but things did not turn out to be in his favour.

He explained, “I have two daughters. Both go to school. This year I have not been able to pay his school fees yet. Daily notices are being sent by the school.”
