Virat Kohli Scores 50th ODI Century, First to Smash 700 Runs in World Cup; Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar's 3 Illustrious Records
Virat Kohli surpassed three records of Sachin Tendulkar, including the record-breaking 50th ODI century against New Zealand in the World Cup 2023 semifinal.

It was truly a historic day for Indian cricket on Wednesday, November 15 as Virat Kohli etched his name in the records books, becoming the first and only cricketer in the world to score fifty ODI centuries in the history of the sport. Before Virat, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar was the only player to score 49 ODI hundreds, Kohli equalled the Master Blaster’s record of 49 centuries in the format against South Africa and the 35-year-old went past Tendulkar by scoring a century versus New Zealand in the semifinal.

Virat Kohli surpassed not one, or two, but three records of Sachin on a single day, with a gritty knock against the Kiwis at Wankhede Stadium battling cramps to go past the three-figure mark.

Kohli became the first player to score a half-century of hundreds in the history of ODI cricket, and he also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in the World Cup.

Back in 2003, Tendulkar had scored 673 runs, which was the highest-ever total by a player in a single edition of the tournament, but Kohli’s century helped him go past Sachin’s tally.

Furthermore, Virat also became the first player in the 48-year-old history of the ODI World Cup to score the most fifty-plus scores in a single edition of the tournament. Courtesy of his latest century, Kohli recorded his 8th fifty-plus score, while Sachin Tendulkar (2003) and Shakib Al Hasan (2019) have 7 fifty-plus scores each.

Shortly after completing his 50th ODI century, Virat Kohli surpassed the 700-run mark and became the only player in the 48-year-old history of the World Cup to score 700 runs in the tournament.

Kohli put his foot on the accelerator after smashing his century, he would go on to score 117 runs in 113 balls, including nine boundaries and two sixes. Kohli currently has 711 runs in ten World Cup 2023 matches, and if India can beat New Zealand, the 35-year-old will have a chance to add to his tally in the final.
