Australia have marched ahead in the race of the semi-final with a 33-run win over England on Saturday at Eden Gardens. It was another clinical performance with the ball for Australia as they won their fifth match in a row and are just one win away from sealing the semi-final berth. On the other hand, England remained at the bottom of the table and were knocked out of the race. It has been a horrifying campaign for the defending champions as they have lost six out of seven matches.
Chasing 287 for victory in Ahmedabad, England folded for 253 in 48.1 overs after a valiant 64 from Ben Stokes to slump to their sixth defeat in seven matches and stay bottom of the 10-team table.
Five-time champions Australia edged closer to securing a semi-final berth alongside India and South Africa — both already qualified for the final four.
India remained at the top of the points table with 7 wins in as many matches as they are the only unbeaten side in the tournament thus far.
South Africa, who are placed at the second spot, qualified for the semis after Pakistan beat New Zealand by 21 runs via DLS method in the first match of Saturday. India and South Africa will face each other on Sunday which will somehow decide which team will finish the group stage at the top.
With the win on Saturday, Australia remained at the third spot on the points table, while the defeat put New Zealand under pressure in the race for semis but still remain intact in the fourth spot.
Meanwhile, Pakistan have jumped to the fifth spot and are alive in the semi-final race but they still have to rely on other teams’ results to advance in the tournament.
Afghanistan have dropped down to the sixth spot but they have a better chance to make it to the semis than New Zealand and Pakistan as their faith is completely in their own hands at the moment.
Sri Lanka and the Netherlands have placed at the seventh and eighth spots respectively with the same amount of points 4.
Bangladesh and England are the only teams out of the semifinal race with six defeats in seven matches.
