Opinion | Uttar Pradesh: The Rise of an ‘Uttam’ Pradesh
UP's journey under CM Yogi Adityanath's leadership is a testament to what focused governance, innovative policies, a clear vision, and a mission-oriented mindset can achieve

In recent years, Uttar Pradesh has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a state often associated with challenges to one that is rapidly emerging as a model of development and good governance. My recent visit to this vibrant state left me impressed and inspired by the progress I witnessed first-hand.

My journey began in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama and home to the magnificent Shri Ram Mandir. The ‘darshan’ of Rama Lalla was a profoundly moving experience, made even more special by the temple’s awe-inspiring architecture. This grand structure stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and serves as a powerful symbol of unity and faith. The temple complex is not just a religious site but also a catalyst for economic development in the region. The influx of pilgrims and tourists is expected to significantly boost local businesses, employment opportunities, and state revenue. The state government has already initiated several projects to improve connectivity and amenities in Ayodhya, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.

From Ayodhya, I travelled to Lucknow, the state capital, where the signs of progress are palpable and unmistakable. The city’s infrastructure has significantly improved, with well-maintained roads, modern public transportation, and clean, organised public spaces. This transformation is not just cosmetic; it reflects a more profound change in the state’s approach to development and governance.

The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the opportunity to meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and members of his top team. What struck me most about CM Yogi was his exceptional depth and breadth of knowledge, coupled with his mission-oriented mindset, which is driving Uttar Pradesh forward. His strong commitment to good governance and administration is evident in the tangible improvements across the state. Under his leadership, Uttar Pradesh has made significant strides in law and order, infrastructure development, and economic growth.

The economic transformation of Uttar Pradesh since CM Yogi took office in 2017 has been nothing short of remarkable. When he assumed leadership, the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) stood at approximately Rs 12.47 lakh crore. It has now more than doubled to approximately Rs 25 lakh+ crore in 2024, reflecting a significant boost in economic activity and investor confidence. This has also propelled Uttar Pradesh from being the seventh-largest state economy in India to the second-largest.

This growth trajectory puts UP well on its way to achieving its ambitious target of becoming a $1 trillion economy. While the exact timeline for reaching this goal may vary depending on various factors, including global and local factors, at the current growth rate, it is conceivable that Uttar Pradesh could reach this milestone in 2027-2028.

The innovative ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative is a key driver of this economic resurgence. Launched in 2018, ODOP aims to encourage indigenous and specialised products and crafts in each of the state’s 75 districts. This scheme has not only boosted local economies but has also helped preserve traditional crafts and skills. The export of ODOP products has reached Rs 2 lakh crore today. These figures represent economic growth and signify the revival and global recognition of Uttar Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage.

One cannot discuss Uttar Pradesh’s transformation without acknowledging the significant improvements in law and order. Once notorious for its high crime rates, the state has seen a dramatic reduction in criminal activities. Recently, while presenting data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the chief minister highlighted that compared to 2016, there has been a 78.17 per cent decline in robbery cases, a 43.21 per cent reduction in murder cases, a 67.42 per cent decrease in riots, and a 70 per cent drop in kidnapping for ransom cases.

This improved security situation has not only enhanced the quality of life for residents but has also created a more conducive environment for business and investment. It’s a crucial factor in the state’s journey towards becoming a $1 trillion economy.

Another key focus area has been the development of infrastructure. The state has seen the construction of new expressways, the expansion of metro rail networks in cities like Lucknow and Noida, and significant improvements in power supply and digital connectivity.

The Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and the ongoing Ganga Expressway projects are prime examples of how improved connectivity is opening up new economic corridors within the state.

Reflecting on my visit, I am excited and optimistic about UP’s future. The state is not just developing; it’s transforming into an ‘Uttam’ (excellent) Pradesh. This transformation is holistic, encompassing spiritual rejuvenation, economic growth, improved governance, and enhanced quality of life for its citizens.

UP’s journey under CM Yogi Adityanath’s leadership is a testament to what focused governance, innovative policies, a clear vision, and a mission-oriented mindset can achieve. It serves as an inspiring model not just for other Indian states but also for developing regions worldwide.

As Uttar Pradesh continues on its path to becoming a $1 trillion economy, it is redefining what is possible in terms of rapid and inclusive development. Once seen as a challenge, the state is now a champion of progress, truly living up to the moniker – ‘Uttam’ Pradesh.
