The Election Commission has replaced two returning officers in North 24 Parganas district.

Kolkata: The Election Commission has replaced two returning officers posted in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, which will go to polls on April 27, because of their unsatisfactory performance, said a senior election official on Friday.

"Two returning officers - Swadesh Mondal and Biplab Deb of Bangaon South and Gaighata assembly constituencies - have been replaced by Amitava Dutta and Saibal Nandi respectively. The EC was not satisfied with their performance and likewise their replacement order has been issued two days back," said state chief electoral officer (CEO) Sunil Kumar Gupta.

He said Deputy Election Commission Vinod Kumar Zutshi, who left for Delhi on Friday evening after a three day visit to the state, had reviewed the poll preparedness, political violence and the law and order situation in the districts where poll will be held in next two phases - April 23 and 27 respectively.

"The poll preparedness in the districts - Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia, where polling will be held in second phase (April 23) is satisfactory. The security arrangement will be adequate and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed in all the polling booths across three districts where 93,51,325 electors will franchise their exercise," said Gupta.

About 1,415 polling booths have been identified as super sensitive in Murshidabad while 69 and 385 polling stations have identified as super sensitive in Nadia and Birbhum respectively.

"The security arrangements will be in different peripheries and technologies like web-casting, digital camera or micro observers will be placed in all these booths. We urged electors to turn out and cast vote freely," said Gupta, asserting polling in the second phase will be fair and peaceful.

A total of 28 general observers and eight expenditure observers, apart from micro observers, have been posted across the three districts, while one police observer has been posted in Murshidabad district, he added.
