New Delhi: On the backfoot over former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi row involving Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, senior party leaders are refusing to comment on the issue. The party which went all out to defend its leader and refused to ask for their resignations is now facing the opposition's ire.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who returned from the US refused to comment on Modi row and said, "There is no minister in the government who is tainted."
The Narendra Modi government faced major embarrassment after Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje claimed that she signed on Modi's immigration papers in her personal capacity as his friend. Sources revealed that Raje claimed the document did not help Modi. She is also consulting experts to see if she can take legal action on the document being leaked.
Meanwhile, the BJP continue to attack the opposition while claiming that the government is running well. "People who are frustrated are making baseless allegations. Everything is going well as far as the party is concerned. The government is running fine, there is nothing wrong," Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said.
Even BJP President Amit Shah evaded questions on Raje after she admitted the authenticity of the document.
Both Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje are in line of fire for allegedly helping Modi.
Sushma stirred a controversy after she admitted that she had no objection to Modi's request to travel out of the UK for his wife's treatment and spoke in this regard with British MP Keith Vaz and British High Commissioner.
Vasundhara came under attack after it was revealed that she helped Modi get permit to stay in the UK. She had allegedly filed application backing Modi in 2011 when she was the leader of the opposition in the state Assembly.
With opposition upping the ante against the Modi government and demanding resignations of its leaders, the BJP is in a difficult situation.
