Lucknow: Questions about a grand alliance between opposition parties loom large in the countdown to the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. Bahujan Samaj Party is prepared to kick start its official campaign with a big showcase of opposition unity on the occasion of the 63rd birthday of its chief Mayawati on January 15.

Sources in the BSP have indicated that the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister will be coming to Lucknow in the first week of January to meet with party leaders over election strategy.

A senior BSP leader, who did not wish to be named, said, “All the leaders of Samajwadi Party, Indian National Lok Dal, Janta Dal (S), Janta Congress Chattisgarh and some more regional parties might be invited to attend the birthday programme.”

As of now, the BSP chief is camping in Delhi to review her party’s strategy for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and meet with alliance partners to finalise the grand alliance.

Despite BSP helping the Congress clinch a victory in the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Mayawati’s absence in the oath-taking ceremonies signal their reluctance to ally with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

Previously, both SP and BSP skipped a crucial meeting between opposition parties on 10thDecember in Delhi.

The Bahujan Samaj Party has been campaigning on the ground for the Lok Sabha Elections for quite some time now. District units of the BSP have also been instructed to hold ‘Bhaichara sammelans’ and cadre camps on the booth level. RS Kushwaha, the state president of BSP, is busy meeting with grass root level party workers in various districts.

Ever since their loss in the 2007 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the BSP has been observing Mayawati’s birthday as ‘Jankalyankari Diwas’. BSP chief Mayawati is also expected to unveil the new edition of her book ‘A Travelogue of my Struggle Ridden Life and BSP movement’
